I might be too late PB for my snatch tip. Which is to tighten the stop tap top that you are fitting tight as possible so the spindle won't turn through it so it's all one solid fitting. You'll still get wet mind you, but I think the above helps when the "heatsĀ£ (?) - waters on! Good luck!!

It's just to give you a bit more purchase when combating the mains water pressure. You're holding the stop tap top with one hand trying to get the thread to start - but it's not quite making it.
With the spindle locked in the on position via the gland nut you can push the top at the body with both hands (the last thing you want is for the fully turned on tap to start turning itself off (through the body) with one hand whilst you're trying your best to get the thread to start with the other).
When the new STT is safely on the old body don't forget to slacken that gland nut back off though.
It's just about giving the plumber a little bit more edge on what can be a messy job.
