Does anyone know if soaking a plate heat exchanger in white vinegar will unblock it? Ive heard whacking it wiyh wood could work and spirit of salts, but ive got loadsa vinegar in cupboard , seens like a plan to use that ,maybe unless im told otherwise. I normally replace, but this is an expensive model for a friend who wants to try cheap option first, before shelling out

Vinegar is ok in the hot water side of a plate to dissolve limescale, but if you've got rust flakes in primary side I find Spirit of Salts dissolves these. I just put S O S in both sides of plate and leave for 15 mins. Don't breathe fumes and gloves/goggles. Then carefully rinse out and then hose through with pressure. Always work like new after.

What's Spirt of Salts Woody? I've used a Finish dishwasher tablets on the gas side heat exchanger with good results as well.

Yes, I did this one today, when I saw rocketman suggest an acid, I thought that sounds a bit more aggressive than vinegar, so bought some acid at b & q. Got to job, when taking plate out, saw a spring and a small plastic piece blocking it ( result! No need flush etc) it was the non return valve broken away from shiftload pump and worked its way up to plate heat exchanger. The acid i was gonna return for moneyback, but my friend took it off my hands as hes a bathroom fitter and would have use for it . So if I get this again , I think spirit of salts could be added to van stock

Just need to be careful when using it, obviously. Always clean the plate outside as you can get some fumes while it works it's magic. Also good for removing limesacle marks from bottom of toilet pan - pour some in water in toilet and leave for a while. Available from ironmongers, Robert Dyas, etc.
