Hi brew mates, Can anyone tell me the difference between Surry and Essex flanges and which one is better for certain purposes. Maybe a video opportunity for T.P Thanks A Surrey flange goes in the top of the cylinder and an Essex flange in the side mate, both can be used for shower pumps and the Essex flange will do for a secondary return.

Fitting an Essex one separates the men from the boys but to be honest they are very easy to do.

I think with today's technology the essex flange could be re invented as PB hints, it can be stoney ground for the uninitiated, Its one of those jobs that, once your shown and know the do's and don't's, its easy, If I'm ever asked to do one, I'll make a video for sure,

Amazing the amount of people that fit them through the immersion boss, defeats the whole idea of the design of them.

They have a split brass washer that you work into the hole, putting through the immersion heater must be hard work!plus you have to get the immersion out! Some crazy fookers out there😝..

Would I be right in thinking that if you have an older cylinder in a hard water area, it would be better to fit a Surrey? I'm thinking that limescale would have built up over years on the inside of cyl and make the inside surface uneven. This may make it difficult for the rubber washer on an Essex to seal. Or isn't this a problem?
