The pipe came up the back & the through the centre of the toilet & then a little piece of copper pipe with a nut & that’s where the 3/8” connector fitted in. Also, the metal shank of the fill valve & metal nut had not tape, paste, washer etc. but once screwed together it didn’t leak I fitted this www.screwfix.com/p/fluidmaster-side-entry-fill-valve-euro-3-8/49003

Was the old valve a Geberit? I've got a job I'm putting off to replace one in a concealed cistern that's 3/8'', similar sounding to yours. Fill valve on a curved length of copper that comes through a small hole in the wall into the cistern from the back and only uses that piece of copper to hold it in place about 10'' further in the cistern, only an inch or so of it visible past where the bent piece goes through the wall so I'm hesitant to work on it. When I touched it, the whole piece of copper moved like it was loose inside the wall. It's one of them - if a decent plumber fitted it I'll be fine, but if it was a builder etc. then I don't want to touch it cos I'll probably end up having to make holes in (tiled) walls. I'm hoping he phones someone else.

Had to renew the flush valve on a Grohe Dal built in vacuum operated cistern for a posh customer recently. Wasn't to bad, but very fiddly. Everything goes in or comes out through the small hole behind the flush plate. Bit like keyhole surgery. Any big job on the cistern, etc would need the wall being half demolished. Raised the customer's eyebrows with the price, but fancy bathrooms have fancy spares prices.
