Hi Guy's worked in an airing cupboard today.. never seen a hot water cylinder like this before ... it had the normal centre pipe at top of cylinder for hot water out then when I looked again it had a second one coming out of the dome say half way down the dome ... There was NO visible central heating pipes in the side of the cylinder for coil,, so my thoughts are this second top pipe must be some sort of heating pipe circulation but I don't know Only problem I got is did not get a chance to take a photo so is there anyone who can shed some light please thank you.........................

It is either a secondary return or a dedicated hot feed to a shower.

Hi PB & Tom I am really gutted I did not get any photo's .....But i bow to your superior knowledge
but I don't see it as a dedicated take off for a shower!!! as there were none present ...
at the end of the day I might get to go back in the future to do something else for them
then i will take a better look and this time get some photo's for you Guys to Mull over !!!!
thanks for your replies...............

If there's no shower at the address then its a tapping for secondary circulation without doubt, I would guess the plumber that installed it, had it in his garage/shed and recycled it on a job rather than wieghed it in for scrap, It is the way of plumbers, We are the world leaders in recycling materials,

Probably a tapping for a temperature or pressure gauge, a secondary return tapping would normally be on the side of the cylinder 1/3rd down from the top.

well thats a possibility Arfur but, I've never seen a stat or pressure gauge on a domestic cylinder, I'm guessing ( and thats all we can do) that the secondary flow will come off the top union and return in this tapping on the dome, so that hot water is circulating and not going going back to a cooler place in the cylinder, Of course I'll stand corrected, I've been wrong before a couple of hundred times,

Ahh, I never read the Astra's post properly, he said " a second pipe coming from the dome " and no visible heating pipes, the earlier copper economy 7 unvented HWC's made by McDonald Engineers in Fife had the connection for the expansion vessel on the dome next to the hot water draw off.
