Just thinking back to the 1980's refurming bathrooms on council eastates, The work co-ordinator says, " all the scrap lead and copper pipes to be returned to the depot, place it outside the house and the driver will collect it," I like most plumbers took half, the tennant took half of the half outside his front door, the driver took half of the half in front of the house, the storeman back at the depot took half of what was left, there would be 8 to 10 plumbers working so the depot was seeing scrap coming in, but nothing like was coming out of the houses, Sometimes the pen is not as sharp as the man on the sharp end of ripping out the scrap,,,

The copper back boiler was the "crème de crème" of all the plumbing scrap.
Mind you after breathing in a ton of soot and getting mucked up to the nines you had earned it!

yea the old copper back boiler was a piss up on its own, and like you rightly say, you'd choked half a day on soot, brick dust and rubble, so a drink after that was most welcome, smiley-eatdrink009drinking
