Wigan was made famous for pies by rival town Leigh, they called Wiganers Pie eaters because wiganers went back to work first in a textile dispute in the Victorian days, The Mill owners said if you don't come back to work, we are shutting the mill down and going to another local town of Bolton, So the Wiganers went back to work, and the rival Leigh dwellers called us humble pie eaters, it stuck,

of course, thats all allegations, We love a pie, meat and potato is my favorite, the good ole PC crowd got involved a while ago and said, " the potato is the major content of this pie and therefore, from this day foreward they shall be called 'potato and meat pie' no one in Wigan or the rest of the Northwest listened to that bollocks, so every pie shop calls them meat and potato pies, ,,what a load of twats we have pushing pens and making rules,,

Thanks Tom, an interesting wee story I’d never heard before.  I stupidly thought there was traditionaly loads of Pie Shops in Wigan, oh and of course Wigan Pier for Northern Soul!!
