I've got to change a heat exchanger on a 16 year old Potterton system boiler (detailed above) and would like to know if it's a boiler off the wall or can it be done in place. So if anyone knows please educate me thank you.

After reading the above thread got the customer to send me a picture of the install pipework Attachment DeletedNo space there for a lift up and off - pipework requires cutting out and reinstalled, with very little wiggle room looking at that lefthand side 22mm nut to elbow pipework, ceiling plasterwork damage looks highly likely to me.

its defo doable the biggest issue will be the water in the heat exchanger, the pipes are at the top and there will be no drain off beneath so water will be dripping all day long, keeping it off the electrrics will be tricky and its going to be heavy, I would not take that job on b myself, After the hard long struggle and if it don't work, you know whats coming, well it worked ok before, As plumberboy's mentor would say " work smart, not hard," I have to hand it to you Battle, you take on awkward jobs, so hats off to you its not a job for the faint hearted,

Never done one battle, but I’ve got to say ,I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole, sell a new boiler here or walk away , unless on the hourly rate with 5 hours deposit paid in advance, I don’t really like to work for clients that seem cheap, them buying materials etc, sticking with an old dog of a boiler etc, but good luck in your mission 💪 hope it turns out a nice earner , you never know as they say👍

Eventually located all the parts I wanted to do this job so storted it today - an interesting challenge from start to finish and not without a twist - when refilling the Automatic Air Vent on the cylinder failed and let me know with a kitchen shower through the light fitting but hay ho that's life. Here's a few snaps of the job. Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedI'll post a few more snaps in another post as three images don't say it all.

Further snaps Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedNow these aren't difficult, just fucking kidding, there heavy, difficult to handle inside the boiler carcass, as the flow and return tubes aren't meant to be removed. Additionally they can't be done inplace because there's two fixing into the heat exchanger from the back which hold the wall hanging bracket in place.

Thanks for taking the time to post some snaps and an update, Battle. Can't be many people changing c i HEXs on these old beasts these days. Sounds like the customers got their heads screwed on, not believing all the tree hugger garbage, just making sure they have a boiler that will keep going no matter what.
Also good to see they had all the essentials (kettle, tea caddy, milk, toaster) in place for you before you started. Hopefully there was a plate of bacon butties just out of shot.

well done Battle you surly are 1 in a million, I don't know a single plumber that would attempt that job, most including me would quote for a new boiler and would even attempt that, I know the weight of those babies, Its a full days work and you have to think, 'what if it don't fire up after all this' because it was perfect before it leaked, so well done battle you've earned my respect, Attachment Deleted
