years ago i had a £30 call out and offered an hour, so if i fixed it in the hour, it was £30 + materials, I soon figured out it was a bad move, If i fixed a problem in half an hour, they wanted me to look at some other stuff so they'd get full value, So i went to call out £30, then , we'll go from there, Today its £50, I don't do free quotes, if they want a quote they can picture text the problem, If its worth my while, I MIGHT go, but 99% of the time i say, " sorry lov I'm fishing today or bike riding" and when they ask " when are you free",
I say " September/October"
fuck um,

I have some set prices. Change fill valve - £60 all in Flush valve - £70 all in, more if the bolts are fecked. Less if it's something like a fluidmaster/Dudley where you can just swap it out without tools If it's a vanity or concealed it's usually more, infact I refuse some jobs on concealed if I'm working through a little hole I usually say I'm too busy. £100 minimum if the pan needs to come out for any reason. Little jobs like tap washers etc. - £30 Change 1/4 turn works - £40 a pair if they're standard size and I can get the old ones out easily enough. Rad swap (same size and valves work) £60 labour if I can lift it on my own. Outside tap - I have an offer on my website to do them for £50 all in - don't make much on that but it gets me repeat work when something else needs doing. Only do em for £50 if they're straight forward, did one today for £80, most I've charged is £110. CH Pump swap £80 labour if valves are OK, £120 if I'm draining down. Don't see many gravity systems these days though 2 port/ 3 port £120 labour. Electric shower swaps I do for £130 all in, as long as it's a Triton Enrich 8.5 going in <-- Still too cheap I think. Change a bath - £180 labour, more for panels if they're a pain. Wall panels I charge £100 per panel bought and fitted + trims, I use multipanel @ £55 each cost to me and mark up the trims to £10 each. Basin swap - £80 labour. Toilet swap - £130 labour. Swap a kitchen sink £100 labour if it will go in without too much chopping. There's a lovely old dear who phones me every October to change the batteries on her old Salus wireless stat that always needs re-pairing after, I don't charge her but she always gives me £20 It's took me a few years to get my prices to a point where the custards don't tell me to feck off or say 'that's cheaper than I thought' I do get a lot of tips though so might have to hike them up a bit

I was talking to a plumber who had inherited his dads business. Everyone loved his dad ,and had turned somewhat on him , whinging etc, as he had started charging a fair price for a skilled trade. He had upped prices significantly on his dad. His dad would charge £20 and go and fix bursts on caravan parks midnight🙀 his dad had bad knees , when retiring, but everyone didn’t go and do him favours back , when he needed them! So I was in agreement with son, don’t be loved by village ,and have no decent cash pot when finishing. A la his dad. Charge well and charge fair(ish)🧐

Very true all that glowbug, people will take advantage of you if they see a weak link. A mate of mine who's in business (not plumbing) says "They're no favours in running a business".
A lot of plumbing firms advertise as "no call out charges", the catch being the first hour charged is triple the normal amount thus hiding the call-out charge in the first hours labour.

I do £45
That needs the be local. I tell people it covers the first hours labour & if I can fix something at that time then that’s the cost plus any materials. I then either give a price to fix or the hourly is £45 plus materials. Going to buy materials or any running around is charged at the same.
If it’s an indian I’m £80 as I’ve no interest & they won’t pay it!

Gents you’re not a Charity, charge as much as you like. If it’s an affluent area where you live charge plenty, people with money expect nice shinny, signwritten vans at their gaff, poor people don’t care! For Asians, double your price a) they’ll haggle b) they’ll not pay you!!
Quote high fixed prices over the phone, that’ll weed out the tyre kickers.
