Can anyone recommend a make of a stud finder please?
Not silverline!
Also, has anyone used them and do they actually work before I spend?
If not, how do you find studs in walls?

I find those "Stud finders" don't really work that well. My way of finding studs is to measure out around 400mm from the corner of a wall then knock on the wall with my hand. You can usually tell by the sound if there's a stud. Another way is to use a small sharp nail . Knock it in to the plasterboard, If there's no stud here then move it across half an inch and try again. Rinse and repeat until you find a stud (work across the stud till you hit the other side when it will again hit nothing) You've now found the first stud. Others should be at 400mm centres (except on very old properties where the centres could be 16 inches) ( I usually use the nail method just above the skirting board so it's not as noticeable)

I use a powerful magnet,it finds screews in the plaster board! It's never let me down.👍
