first stage is plunge but if it won't go, its time to take the trap off, If the trap is clear then its either trying a pipe snake or taking taking the waste pipe apart, awefull smelly job, _t4MrEZkt3xFthuI5pxo

How about aav issues?
Had 2 last year that were clean as a whistle but wouldn't clear
Aav, took top off & cleared
Learned something at least

I can't say I've ever had problems caused by AAV's I can understand how a AAV fitted where it should't be can cause problems, I've just never come across any badly fitted ones,

I think when they fail rather than badly fitted
I had a blocked toilet couple months ago, well, not blocked but when sink water run it bubbles in pan.
All tiled in
I went in ready to smash the bathroom up
Saw 4 screws & aav under
Took top off, put it back on
Tested few times, hey presto
£80!!!!

What's an "AAV" I assume it stands for automatic air vent - if it is I've never be asked to repair one and only seen them on boilers vents and hot water tanks never on sinks.

water can only flow down a drain if its vented, if the air can't get in the water will lock in the vacuum, this is why every soil pipe has an open end which usually ends over the gutters because of the smell coming out, A AAV can be fitted on a soilpipe , this allows air in but stops smells coming out, but if they are used wrongly they won't work, for instance the drain should have an open vent somewhere along its lenght, I it has't a AAv won't work properly and you get what rocketman has discribed, blocked waste pipes or soilpipes,

Now I understand what the situation and problem is - I've seen those valves on on suites but they normally make a very distinctive sound when they flush the toilet that noise is what I listen for for confirmation that's functioning.

another symptom of wrongly fitted AAV's is the traps being pulled out of the bath/shower/sink and smells in the bathroom because of it,
