Hello everyone!
I'm just piping up a new shower I bought (Mira mode - looks good but time will tell...) and might have made a mistake. The plumbing is in 22mm close to the mixer then I reduce down to 15 and also change direction. So there is a 45 bend followed immediately by a reducer. The pipe length between the two is just "perfect" so that the two fittings butt each other.
By my standards the rest of the pipework is not bad - quite a long run in copper 22mm, all clipped and not a single elbow (apart from the one above) but a few swept bends. It'll look a mess when I've finished soldering but its mostly in the loft so should be ok.
Question is will the solder flow through the gap in those two fittings or should I cut a new bit of pipe a few mills longer to separate the two? Both fittings are new of course.

hello dafty, ( I like the new name) I'm assuming the butted up fittings have pipe inside them and not just fitting to fitting, If so, all is ok the solder will travel ok, rule to soldering,
clean fitting, flux all round and heat up till solder runs, jobs a good un, don't worry about drips overheating is better than not enough heat, alway make sure every part of the fitting gets enough heat, then let it cool before touching, spray water on to speed the cooling up if you need to,

So there I was last night relaxing with a few plumbing videos when suddenly I was famous! I was the star of one of Tom's latest howto videos! I couldn't believe it. Thanks a lot for that - its definitely helped me and I hope it helps others too. It was exactly what I meant.
The name came from a suggestion from your learned colleague, a certain Mr Puller. I don't think he was using it to be kind particularly, but I liked it so here I am. Don't know why but that thread seems to have gone. Maybe something to do with registering as "leaks" then changing name to this one. Anyway, doesn't matter.
Now, I'm not that daft as to try to solder without pipe but it is the sort of thing I might have tried in the past. I'm currently (very slowly) doing the first fix for a new bathroom so had quite a bit of pipe to run from cylinder and cold water tank. I ended up buying 18M of 22mm and 3M of 28mm and I've nearly used it all which for me is a lot. Still it was more fun than chopping a 110mm branch into my soil stack.
Anyway, last thing to say for now is thanks once again and to mention that I asked two plumbers questions over on diynot (boo hiss) and I got less than half an answer to one of them. Fair enough really since noone has a right to have their questions answered for free but I bet if I asked them here there'd be a much better chance of getting a decent answer. If I do and they get answered I'd certainly put a link into the diynot thread pointing over here in case anyone wants a proper answer. That would also be me doing a little to make this site even more popular - as it should be. Every little helps as they say.

Tell you what, I’ve been kicked off better Forums than that fella, arseholes!! Just as a wee footnote; there’s now a Copyright on the term DaftyDIYer, so I’ll round to collect my Royalties shortly. Scottish notes please.

That's not good Tom. Annoys me that folk get banned from forums especially as it is usually them that has posted all the good stuff in the first place. I'm posting less and less there. What did they ban you for - promoting your own site? Anyway, one of my last posts was this: If I'm lucky enough to get a decent answer I'll edit my post over there so people know where to come (right here of course) for the right answer. Hi
Two things I've been thinking about and don't know the answer to. They are about two different things but didn't want to clutter up the forum with two threads. Anyway here they are!
1/ About stopcock vs lever valve. Why have a "stopcock" on the internal rising main? Wouldn't a full bore lever valve be easier to operate? Interestingly, the water company's external isolation valve is plastic and shuts off in about a quarter of a turn so maybe that is like a ball valve?
2/ What is the point of a half crossover. e.g. this:
www.toolstation.com/shop/p60544
I mean what are they mostly used for and is one side of it just regular copper pipe - the other end being a normal end feed fitting? Perhaps I should get one to have a play. I've used the full crossovers a few times but just don't get what these are for.
Thanks a lot to anyone giving me answers to these two!

hello dafty, firstly, I never found out why I was banned from there, they never answered my emails to say, It was a long time ago and i did't set up this forum untill 3 years ago so it was't than, anyrode fuck um, question 1. yes full bore is better and a lever type is easier and can be used it you want to, Its just a brass stoptap takes less room and is less cumbersome and its traditional and is inkeeping with the builders way of thinking, " we've always used brass stoptaps", Q 2 a half crossover is used to get over one pipe, for instance,, You've got hot and cold running along a wall in the kitchen/bathroom, you need a hot and cold feed to the basin/sink, the top pipe will tee off from the running pipe but the bottom pipe will not, this is where a half crossover is used, it looks neat and tidy, The only alternative to that is, a full crossover on the top pipe, which is less tidy, I hope that answers your questions dafty, NEVER worry about taking up too much room, use all you want, say hello to the decent lads over at donuts and let them know, this is the premier site for no bullshit advice from tradesmen and other DIY's keep coming back

Another one who got banned from DIYdoughnuts. Think it was that lefty twat JohnD who had it in for me. Barsteward is a moderator. Anyway, we've got the brew cabin now. Much better and friendlier banter, and you don't have to mind Ps and Qs too much.
And welcome to DiyDafty.

DIYDafty
Some bloke called Tom made an excellent video a few years back on how to pull a half crossover instead of buying one - it's the first one on here -
The half crossovers from merchants, etc are the same thing, except you buy one, instead of making it yourself on a bender. In Tom's example on the vid, if he was using a shop bought one, the plain end would go into the tee, and the swaged/flared end would join the pipe that's at right angles to the other two.

I’ve been banned several times from DIYdoughnuts, you maybe surprised to learn!! Yes me, you’d think they’d be grateful for having me??!!! Last time I got banned from the Combustion Chamber Pot & the main forum, for saying Telly Tony Agile & Jimmy Savile shared a chocolate coloured boy when he worked at the BBC. I think Tony is a Mod with a limited sense of humour.
I must be honest, I wouldn’t mind getting back into the Chamber Pot as there was some very knowledgeable guys in there, but hey it’s no great miss.

Didn't a well know member of doughnuts die from misuse of a grinder?

Didn't a well know member of doughnuts die from misuse of a grinder? Yes. Can't remember his name, but I think he rigged up an angle grinder with something like a circular saw blade. Proceeded to use it to cut some tree branches, it kicked back, and took a big slice out of his neck. It's lesson to us all to respect power tools, and never use them for something they weren't intended for.
