Morning all, Just been reading Tom's comment on Diy Dafty's post re spraying water to cool the joint.
I remember when first learning the basics of soldering, being told not to shock the piece by dousing in cold water in case the rapid contraction caused a leak. This is not a criticism by the way, I like many of you spray or wipe a joint with a wet rag to get on with the next part of the job quicker. I was just thinking Tom this would be a good subject for a myth busting excercise, (if you havent already done it). Can dousing a hot joint cause problems ? Anyone out there had a leak caused this way.

thanks Laura I will do a myth buster on this subject, I have used many ways including, a spray bottle, wet rag, dipping in a bucket and spitting on it, though this causes an unpleasant smell,

My first boss plumber had a saying "spit on it and if it bounces off it's still too hot to move - if the spit sticks to the pipe, it's then set and cool enough for you can carry on. I don't know what the customers thought to him though gozzing all over his hot fittings !! You certainly meet some characters in this plumbing game!

Great video Tom👍👍
I favour a spray bottle with some nice scented kitchen cleaner & water, makes a nice job of cleaning the fitting & smells nice too👍

Not you as well, Dick? You've been watching too many vids by PB plumber on Youtube where he uses Brasso on his new pipework.
If the punters see others with pipes smelling of Olive's Chanel Number 5 and shiny enough to see their ugly faces in, they all want them done like that.

Ach, I just do it for the young pups on-site, they expect the old fella to be as rough as fuck. I overheard them the other day checking out my work ‘How does the auld cunt leaving a neat job like that & so fast too’. Reminds me of a myself as a youngster, the old boys would stand at the bending machine for ages bending up copper, you’d be running around like a headless chicken & they’d still be faster than you. They’d have their ‘first fix’ Plot done & in the Tea Hut waiting for the van to take them home. Think, Plan & Execute!!

I remember an old un say, first you need to know how its done, and when you've done it well for 100 times at least, you then go on the next level of expertise, you're on that level Dick,

Just looking at this from the diy dafty angle (that is the theory and not the practice and the theory without the common sense) if the shock contraction caused a leak wouldn't allowing the pipe/fitting/solder to cool down gradually do exactly the same thing but just slower?
Unless you heat the copper so much it can be annealed or even melted then from a chemical point of view does it make any difference at all whether the copper is cooled in a bucket of water or cooled slower by surrounding air?
