Just bung it
You only need the outer bit to seal, youre not bunging it all, the bungs are shaped so just get it in.

Wish I knew where to buy a 28mm bung. Don't fancy losing a carrot in there...

Wow - that credit card method looks better than a bung so might be your _first_ thing to try? Although from memory on my tank I think it uses brass connectors which might even have nipple sticking out (not sure about that) but I suppose if you've got any kind of flush surface to work with that'd be your best bet?

Make sure it's the wife's credit card though because if you fuck it up it's a bonus.

Not personally but a plumber mate of mine told me about someone he knew that it happened too. them monument bungs I linked you tighten them up and they expand in the fitting, they can't fall out !

the trick is to get a suck on them, as they are in the outlet and you open a drain off or undo a joint, the escaping water will suck the bung/card and seal it. in theory, but sometimes ole SOD comes along and ruins your day,,
