Did we have a post on electric boilers?
I can’t find it

I can't remember one, I've fitted loads in new build flats that were timberframe and gas was not allowed, they work well, heating an unvented system and rads round the flat, I'm not too sure about the cost of running,

As the resident expert on absolutely everything, here’s a brief run-down on said boilers;
Firstly & most importantly, the efficiency/running cost of electric boilers is completely down to the tariff that’s available.
Types of boilers. Two types of boiler ‘Storage’ & ‘Flow Through’.
The Storage type will generally be the most efficient, it stores heat & is heated by a cheaper Tariff overnight(off-peak, White Meter, E10, E7 etc etc). The Electricity Supplier may even have a special cheap Tariff for these units. They normally are either direct Heating HW & a SS plate heat exchanger for the CH. Or the Primary water is heated & the HW is heated via a plate HE. Either way these types of electric storage boiler are called ‘Combis’.
The Flow Through type is the wee low water content boiler, where the water is heated as it flows through it & the elements modulate On & Off, depending on the heat demand. HW is provided with either a standard indirect cylinder on a Y or S plan, or more sensibly, via an E7 twin immersion heater direct cylinder.
Both these boilers will generally be no more than 12KW, as the Domestic Electrical supply is limited to 80-100amps @ 230-240V.
Hope that helps👍

Just as another wee footnote to this, you could easily make your own ‘Storage Combi’ electric boiler. It would be limited to a load of 6KW with a standard E7 cylinder; using the two immersion heaters on an E7 & building a Heatbank, with your own SS plate HX for HW & the CH coming from the E7. Ideal for small Flats & Houses with minimum Heat Loss.

Thank you Tom for recognising my greatness, as you know many are lost for words in my presence. But as I’m a humble man, I do try to interact with the common people.
