on Saturday I intend to do some pipe work which will involve draining the central heating system, the down stair radiators have drain off valves but I'm a bit puzzled about how they work, normal drain off valves have a barbed bit for the hose and a square bit you use to open them but these have a barbed bit with the square inside ?
its appears you have to open them first then jam on the hose,is this correct or am I missing something obvious ?

Is it in the radiator valve matey?

turn both sides of the rad off, remove the drain off nipple, have a bowl ready to catch drips and attach hose pipe, then open the valves,

You'll be able to remove the nipple with a rad bleeding key. Might need to grip key with some pliers if it's there for years.

turn both sides of the rad off, remove the drain off nipple, have a bowl ready to catch drips and attach hose pipe, then open the valves, ah I see,so in effect closing the radiator valve closes the drain off,now it makes sense I had visions of having to open the bleed nipple,it flying out -water pissing everywhere and being unable to get the hose on ! thanks to everyone for your advise
