Does anyone have a recommendation for TRV's and a manual thermostat (I'm not interested in being able to control it from the bus/work/the moon.)

Funnily enough I'm looking into valves for two new rads I need to install. I've got the Drayton in another room and it does look smart and I seem to recall good reviews (by who?) but I've never been convinced it works that well although to be fair I've never done any scientific tests. I don't like Drayton at all due to their MVs failing all the time. I need a posh looking valve so I was thinking about this. www.amazon.co.uk/Honeywell-VTL200-15A-Valve-Lockshield-Pack/dp/B075KJJY1P/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=honeywell+trv&qid=1563136274&s=gateway&sr=8-5Then I realised I'd need two of them which is a fair bit of change. Finally I remembered that I'm putting in an extra zone to control that room only (for a lodger) and so the wall stat should be sufficient (??). So now my thinking is I just need a nice looking traditional lockshield and wheelhead valve per rad (two rads in the one room). If anyone can confirm that I'd be very grateful !

If there's only one room in that zone and it has its' own wall stat, then you're spot on. No TRV. Lockshields only, never closed but if you're not having them fully open make sure you balance well, the room needs to be able to get to temp or the that zone will be calling for heat constantly.

Sorry to hijiack your thread karl but think I've only got one more question about this. I hadn't thought about what would happen if someone turned the rads off whilst having the room stat on high and I'm extreemly grateful to JC for highlighting that possibility ! It wouldn't be good.... Is that the idea behind having both ends of the rad as lockshields so the user can't fiddle with them (and turn them off) ?

Most combi boilers have an internal by-pass, however it’s always prudent to have a by-pass valve fitted & adjusted. Especially if you have a condensing boiler👍

But, I wouldn't want the boiler running through the bypass all the time just coz someone closed down the rads so I like the twin lockshield idea.

I don't think so. Its an Ideal rd1 3100. But wouldn't it also put pressure on the pump forcing the ABV open all the time? ALso the boiler is quite a long way from the pump so two one inch pipes would be kept hot for no reason?

Built like a brick Shithouse but prone to fan problems. I wish I’d a quid for every fan I fitted in these boilers. Not many around anymore, but we called them the Christmas Specials. You’d be out over Xmas changing fans & charging a fortune in the process......kerching, kerching!!!......😎😎💶💶💶💶💶 A design fault of course, but boiler manufacturers are like Doctors, they bury their mistake. But hey, they’ve all made me a fortune over the years👍👍👍 If I were you matey, I’d have a spare fan under your bed😉 Free advise as always from your Uncle Dicky👍💋

I take it you don't mean the tiny fan not much bigger than a 50p pence ? Back in the days when I used to get someone round, he basically said "oh that's only the something something fan don't worry about that..." and I think he left it broke (might have even been in pieces). I'm guessing there's a bigger fan somewhere....
Update: So I see there is. If that broke how would I know for sure it was the fan and not something else? Maybe one of the status lights on the board blink?
