Does a Steel Shower Tray need to be earthed ? And if so can only a qualified electrician do it ?
On wall above the tray is a Mira Event electric shower. The tray waste is standard 40mm plastic to Soil Stack. Water supply is copper pipes under the floor boards.
Couldn't find much info out there. Something which is similar I guess is metal baths. And even then opinions seem to range from : "not needed" to "equipotential connection" to "earth bonding" I don't know what all these mean.
Maybe it's less hassle to not bother with a steel shower tray.
Thanks in advance.

What way would you make the earth bonding to the tray cause if it doesn't have a preformed connection point you may invalidate any warranty the tray has. However, if it has a suitable earthing lug I would just bond it to the copper pipe if the house has other pipe points earthed that way.

Yes it some lugs attached to sides. So do I need to check the bathroom pipes under the floorboards to see if they have earth points ?
I know the cold pipe downstairs in utility area does, but not sure about upstairs.
Thanks for your reply.

Is there a sink in the room? There would be bonding on pipes there unless they are pex pipes.

Thanks for the link. I'll have a read.
The bathroom has a sink > so hot and cold pipes (both copper) > no earth bonding that I can see. The bathroom also has a toilet > cold feed (copper pipe) > no earth bonding that I can see. Maybe it is done under the floor boards.
I presume all the pipework is connected though? So downstairs > under kitchen sink > the rising main has an earth point and it connects to both hot and cold and to the kitchen sink. Also downstairs > utility area sink > has earth bonding on both hot and cold taps and to sink and to metal strip under the worktop.
Not sure why it's not done upstairs.

Very odd. If there was a bath there previously, the wires for bonding might be buried or someone may have ripped them out with the bath after a revamp?

If you can run an earth cable from an existing bonding point down below, it'll be an easy job to link sink to tray. Definitely no sparky required for a bonding job, just a matter of linking it all up.

I don't know the rules on earthing, It went crazy in the 2000's, we had to link every pipe across the boiler, then it was changed again to just one pipe and the boiler earth,Its probably change half a dozen times sinse because, the sparks have to keep to the regs on leccy, and that means more money for the regs makers whats our by word for rules and regs,, rules are for fools,

Thanks very much for your help. I'll have a look under the floor boards anyway to see if bonding exists there. And I'll check if I can earth bond from the point downstairs.
No major revamp really. Basically it is a shower alcove > previously had a normal stone resin shower tray and we (well I) are redoing the en-suite as it is getting on a bit now. I have this steel shower tray which I bought a number of years ago on a special offer and never got round to using, so thought I would make use of it.
If there is no earth bonding upstairs then it as always been like that since we moved in.
