I know you're supposed to use a check valve on mains but if you didn't have one to hand would you bother? Is it that important ?
I'm not worrying about the few extra pence but more that its one more thing that could go wrong and cause trouble down the line?
Which valve would you get ?

Standard W/M valves have been used from the day dot with no problems, so I wouldnt bother with a check valve.

I wouldn't fit one dd, like you say something to go wrong which they do very often. The thing to remember about new water regulations is that they're not retrospective.

I've removed plenty washing machine check valves as the customers hates the water hammer noise they create when they've been in for a short period of use!

Has there been a new rule about bottom entry float valves needing a check valve? I'm sure I read it somewhere.

Scottish Water make us fit WM valves with Double Check Valves on new builds. Presumably Scottish Water don't care about problems with water hammer though and only care about some customer suing them for drinking foul water. Anyway, I see there are pluses and minuses but this is on the first floor so I'm going to do everything possible to reduce the chance of a leak and any extra valve adds risk. THe possiblity of the thing hammering away at night has sealed it for me. I've now wasted spent my cash on a pair peglar washing machine valves that don't come with checks.
