I've used them when you've bought a replacement strainer for stainless steel drainer and it's not a direct replacement (the new unit is shorter than the original) and this bridge the loss to allow the existing pipework and waste to remain unaltered.
Now the twenty year old the original had a long stainless steel thread stub and the new version comes that much shorter - thus pastic is cheaper than stainless allowing a cost saving for the supplier.

It looks like the 1 1/4'' one is a euro adapter, but the 1 1/2'' one is just an extender. It's confusing that they have both items under the same heading.
