www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-fatmax-5-33-886-pro-5m-tape-measure/32477More money than sense you might say. Well I bought this a year ago thinking it would help me measure accurately and last a lifetime since I'm only a low use DIYer. Having wasted stupid money on it, about a month ago it started losing its grip on the tape when extended. Today, it was very stiff to get int/out and then whilst extending it a bit of plastic fell out and now it won't lock at all. Total shit and I'll never trust that brand again !

www.amazon.co.uk/Stanley-533886-FatMax-16ft-Measure/dp/B000X2F3E8/ref=sr_1_3Well, I started my research for a new one. Thought I'd need around a tenner to get a reasonable one. On the grounds that: A/ PB has never been wrong before and B/ For ten quid there aren't that many decent ones. The Komelon looked good but was only £2 cheaper than the fatmax. SO living up to my dafty credentials, I've gone and bought another fatmax!

I buy the Stanley (non fatmax) ones for 2 for a tenner on offer at Screwfix, I buy about 5 a year and just have loads scattered about the place as I'm sick of looking for them. My problem is the yellow paint wears off the markings long before they jam up.

Got mine for 15 which is only a fiver more than Dicks link. I'm hoping the other one was a dud and this one will last me the next ten years. I might have got the double sided one if I'd seen it before I bought - mind you the two scales might confuse me a bit.

Update: New one arrived so I thought I'd open the old one. Credit to fatmax its easy to open and nothing springs out when you do so easy to put back. That's where my praise stops.
The grip that stops the tape rolling back in is a tiny bit of crappy plastic. I've pictured the old and new side by side and you can see where the old broke. To my mind that's designed to break (to get you to buy another).
For £15 I'd like to join it back together but other than superglue which I imagine won't hold, not sure how to.

I think only Hilti live up to their past reputation now, lots of companies build crap ,on their good name, made in the past, Worcester , vaillant , stanley, jcb are a few that come to mind. I think Danfoss very Ropey now aswell .
