Warning: Very long!
Thought I'd post up problems from the other side.
Neighbour had Drayton Boilers in to fix his boiler. Boiler is a 4 year old weisman (condensing but NOT a combi) where apparently the external pump failed. They put in a new alpha 3 pump with all the shiny lights (and no doubt unreliability), did some other bits then said he needed a powerflush and all 16 of his rads need replacing has there was such much crud in the system. He already has a magna fitted and takes out the magnatite himself. Powerflush alone would be £700 plus vat = i.e. £840 !!!
He then did some searches and found a company 2 hours drive away. No exxageration 2 hours drive. Why he picked them I do not know !! Well they claimed to be good and have all the gear but IMO both engineer and customer need to think about the other side. That 4 hour round trip has to be paid for somehow !!
Anyway the guy turns today up to do the powerflush. He's got what looks like in the pic to be a kamco with extra large magnet attachments and also carries infra-red kit to look at the rads. Some things definitely seem good about him but to me one thing a bit odd.
After an hour or so he gets neighbours wife to turn on the hot taps and the water is full of crap. Leak in the HW cylinder coil he says (50 year old cylinder so definitely plausible). But then, he comes down from the loft and says the insulation over the header tank has split and all the insulation material is going into the system. Did he split it, did the Drayton boilers twat before him do it or did it really happen by itself?
A bit suspicious to my mind the hot water gunk was noticeable only when this guy was there although it might well be becausew the powerflush machine pressure increase might have forced it out through the coil.
On the plus side this guy only wants £375 for a new cylinder including all materials and fitting and for the powerfluish itself wants about £400. And no money for his petrol!
Its all a bit odd to my mind but I suppose neiughbour doesn't help himself getting a bloke in from Kent (we're in Berkshire) which is literally half way round M25
Forgot to say the second bloke said there was nothing wrong with the pump that was replaced (neighbour kept the old one). It was a grundfos similar to mine. Certainly impeller was free but obvisouly don't know if it was working unless plugged in. He also said the rads were fine and older rads tend to have better flow through than some of the modern ones.
