So, can we discuss whether they’re any good, do they work, what’s the best one.

Snake oil!
Probably sold by the same people who do those magic balls you put in your car's fuel tank to get extra 10mpg and 20 mph.
Never fitted one, never will.

Took some wirey bits out of one once thinking they could be the cause of the low water pressure, however, it was more likely to be the workings of it (there was no scale collected in it at all). Fitted one for a fusy customer once who said that she had black bits coming through her taps (just to pacify her). I've one fitted in my house on the supply going to the combi just because one is recomended to br fitted. I'd say that it's another future contender for the "plumbing museum of seemingly good ideas at the time".

I've not got one on my combi and I believe the heat exchanger is blocked with lime scale, I'm going to fit a new heat exchanger and a scale reducer, then it will be a case of watch this space, see if it stops it or not...

More likely to be the ch side of plate that's blocked. If it is, money better spent cleaning system and fitting Maganaclean. I live in hard water area, and before I cleaned system and fitted Magna, the plate got blocked with rust flakes couple of times. Hardly any scale on hw side of plate. But being tight, I got myself a bottle of Spirit Of Salts and cleaned both sides of plate with it. After cleaning, hw performance was like new and still is several years later. Obviously cleaning the plate is no good if you put it back on a dirty system without a magnetic filter.

boiler's got a filter on it, I've removed filter, and to my surprise hardly any shit on magnet.. I'm gonna take the plate off and give it a good clean. Would it be ok to put acid into the hot water side of the plate? Do you think it would shift limescale? Cheers woody👍

Yes, Enders. Put some acid in both sides, will shift the lot. Only for 10 or 15 mins though, then flush out well. And don't forget the PPE - especially eyes and watch the fumes. Do it outside as it can smoke slightly but the fumes are invisible. Will be fine if sensible and take your time.

Yep, that's the stuff. Will sort your problem. If you get problems getting it, One Shot drain cleaner does the same thing. Never used it though. Always used SOS, get it from ironmongers. Remember those? Yes, we still have one local.
