Moving pipes from back wall to side for new kitchen. Theres a rising main and HW 15mm pipes but can't make sense of the bigger heating pipes!
There was almost certainly a boiler there decades ago and someone has labelled the pipe directions BUT they might be wrong.
The numbers are definitely right and show which pipes get hot first as the system warms up.
Basically in that cupboard there are 4 pipes coming in and only 2 going out. The ones going out must be the flow/return but why four coming in?
I'm planning to keep to the two tee'd loops but move them into the ceiling but I'd really like to know why its like this ?

Just to add I'm 95% sure the flow must be coming from above as the boiler is in the garage and the flow from it goes into the airing cupboard upstairs in 28mm. THe two pipes that come out of the floor are surely flow/return to the downstairs rads? The would mean the labelled arrows are wrong.

s plan with header tank in loft. Flow, return, vent & cold feed? You need to investigate where the pipes come from & go to.

the two 28mm pipes will have been the circs from the boiler to the cylinder on a gravity system, so when the boiler was moved, they would become the flow and return from the new boiler, the 22mm pipes from downstairs are linked in and then we have two pipes which I'm not certain, I'd guess another rad and pipe marked number 2 is defo marked wrong,

Thanks a lot Tom that makes a lot of sense. Having done some more heat up tests etc could this new diagram be right? I'm assuming that the 22mm pipes on the floor are the flow/return to downstairs rads and the 22mm pipes coming in from the ceiling are the flow/return for the upstairs rads. Must have been dickpuller who did the original job (down south to earn some proper money) as he drew arrows on the pipes the wrong way just to piss off the next plumber. haha No doubt an average kitchen fitter would look at that and say "fkin hell....I'm not touching that....better box it all in...". What I'm planning on doing is moving all the pipes to the left wall which will be the end of the worktop. That way I'll only need to create one false wall on the left at the end of the worktop so no difficult boxes to tile around at the back of the worktop. Not sure if I'm being my usual dafty self here....

Am I over thinking this or is there a problem on the return side where you have 2 22mm pipes going into a tee from opposite directions and then onwards into the main 28mm return ?
Anyway, I suppose if its worked like that for dozens of years I'll just replicate those tees further back in the ceiling and it should just work the same way whether or not I'm right/wrong about the flow directions.
Family is away, I've drained down so here goes...... <gulp>

Ha Ha, that is so true cinders, Especially at home, If I'm doing a job, my missus wants me to start after she goes out and be finished and tidied up before she gets back, I don't know if you ever watched, 'beat the clock' on the London palladium in the 60's, Thats what its like in our house, I've got the time it takes for her to do the shopping to, fit a boiler, 6 rads and have it all working, You should see her face as she walks in, and its not done, you can cut the atmosphere with a knife

Yeah, and "can I turn on the heat yet?". You'd love to say " I've just won a holiday of a lifetime for 1! When are you off?"
