here's true story, 20 years ago I'm in a petrol station, my lad was about 10 and wanted to help me fill the tank, So I'm at the side of him and he's holding the pump and filling the tank, Next thing this split arse toffee nosed interfering came from another car and is giving me grief, " he's not old enough to be pumping petrol" she said, and she was stood there, all important, all holier than thou and had a lighted fag in her hand, she was so intent on telling me the law, she forgot she had a fag in her hand, When i pointed that out to her, she fucked off smartish, I only wish we had cameras then ,  |

I don't know the rules. I'm sure there are H&S rules a mile long that specify to the mm how far away you need to be to smoke from different kinds of works. I would guess that its probably not allowed.
BUT I hate people like the knob with the camera. Its not his business. Maybe if he lived himself right next door he could have asked about it but off camera and in a non-aggressive way. Those blokes in the trench are doing a hard days' work and don't need a prick like that.
AS an aside (and excuse the dafty question) but what does happen if you were to light an open gas pipe? I assume it wouldn't explode - just flame out like a giant ciggarrette lighter? BUt in any case, I imagine most of the time those blokes wouldn't actually have any gas escaping. THe gas would be off or if they were somehow cutting in live, I'm sure they wouldn't be smoking then !

Reminds me of a pal of mine, he was a bugger for just leaving his Blow Lamp on & sitting on the floor, instead of soldering a fitting, turning it off & preparing the next fitting or bit of pipework.
So this day he was soldering at a Gas Meter in a Garage, sat the Lamp down, but he turned & knocked the Meter ECV on, well, the flames shot across the Garage, he runs out shouting & screaming!!
The apprentice & I were rolling around laughing, but eventually got to the valve & shut it off😂😂😂
But the careless twat did it again on a New Build, again connecting to a External semi-concealed Meter. His lamp fell over & melted the Yellow incoming meter supply & flames were shooting up in the air!! Fucking hilarious😂😂😂
Fortunately, the Mains Saddle was still exposed in the road & we shut that off.
