Ok, so I sort of hijacked another thread with my question which Tom kindly partly answered but still have a question so will ask it here...
Current rad is 1113mm wide - its the old 1970s one. Since I'm replacing the rad I might as well get rid of the crappy valves too. Now, if I get a 1000m wide rad then there should be no problem adjusting the pipework above concrete floor as can get extenders etc.
But on the other hand, it feels like I should be getting the 1110mm since thats replacing like with like. But is that more risky in case its too wide?
So if I want a new rad with new valves which one to get ?

You could also cut the pipes down lower and bring them up to exactly where you want them. Or do something disgusting like add pex onto the copper with a compression fitting and get flexibility that way. Yuck! Don't listen to me though, I think Rockys idea is great.

rockys idea is brill, I'd spend ages working out which is best because, each situation has its own problems, like corners, skirting board, floor levels, doors, then the wife come in from shopping and says, " my curtains don't go with that" and, its an ' all change' senerio

Right thanks a lot all I'm glad I kept asking about this. Now I know what I'm gonna do.
I think I'm gonna use a combination of Rockys, CInders and Tom's solution! Will start with the same size rad, be careful with the packaging, and if the pipework gives me trouble will take it back and get the smaller one. All the while I've got Cinders option and going round the houses below the rad and Toms also of using the old valve.
