Saw previous thread...about cutting the syphon out and de-coupling the pan and cistern. Brill idea.
How is the best way to do it.(tools etc)
Save reinventing the wheel. cheers

I hav't tried that out for real yet, I had a butchers and getting to the nut to cut it is harder than you think, I'm not saying its impossible but it will be challenging, If I come across an old cistern I do a ' myth buster' video

Just cut the bolts off
Bend then & they will snap off eventually
Once they’re cut a bit easier to bend

Yes, as noted in a previous thread. Cut the syphon away from inside the cistern... and the cc unit will decouple

In my instance it seems a bit tight and a saw blade would be damaging the glaze on the pan and I have no access underneath to get to wing nuts due boxing and tiling. Jimmy

Cutting the siphon is a great idea, but lots of CC cisterns don’t have plates & the bolts go through the actual cistern. Many are stainless steel, so a cunt to cut too!!

Hi The units I have are Ideal Standard.(with plates, bolts and wingnuts underneath)
I have changed out 2 lots of syphons and bottom mounted filler valves by undoing the accessible but very rusted wingnuts with a tool I made...which was driven by my 3/8 ratchet and socket.
Used the authentic Ideal standard doughnuts. No problems. But this last CC unit is boxed in and tiled. Hence looking for a clever solution from you more experienced guys... to save me having to destroy half the bleein' bathroom.

Even if i get the cistern off and replace the syphon and filler.....how do i do up the nuts when replacing the cistern ? jimmy

I've had too many tussels with these rusty bolts to make matters worse quite oftern the makers have put the bolt heads in a little recess of porcelain just enough to stop you getting a hacksaw blade in straight!Hence, one packet of jr hacksaw blades and 1hr later you're still at it and the black gunge is oozing out of the joint and the smell of stale piss is everywhere along with a bit of your own blood from a newly accquired cut ......only an idiot would ever want to become a plumber!! epilogue, One freezing winters day I saw a workmate working outside looking very cold and fed up making good to a soilpipe he had just fitted, I stopped for a brief chat "Looks a cold job Andy, nonetheless I'll swop you jobs if you like"?Andy then says, "Why, what you doing?",I reply, "A new syphon in a 90s CC Shell suite"!!"Not bloody likely" he replied!!

Jimmy, the only solution to your problem, is take the whole toilet out, you've no chance of getting to those nuts,

Jimmy, the only solution to your problem, is take the whole toilet out, you've no chance of getting to those nuts, I was hoping you would not say that....lol...but you are right................... if it was not tiled in. I don't have spare tiles....as was done by previous owners. (the useless bastards)
Looks like I will have to remove/destroy the boxing and make a new "feature" with some suitable colour matched tiles chosen by the Obergruppenfuhrer.
That will take me 2 days... never mind the plumbing.
Every job I go to do in the house has been bastardized by the builders or the previous nitwits.
House is only 20 years old. Typical problems, Isolator valves put in...and the slot facing away...so cant be accessed and turned. Laminate floor in through lounge and diner...good quality laminate...with no expansion allowed so it was pushing the skirting off. Had to lift the lot, insulate under and relay the diner with carpet in the lounge. Light fitting in kitchen..looked odd with polyfiller around it....took it down to find a large hole which had been filled with a square of laminate about 3x4 inches and filled over. Entrance hall painted a nice blue and red..(yuk)..which looked like it had been applied with a yard broom giving a 'partial' artex look. Took 3 days of rubbing back.
Some windows never opened and hinge mechanisms rusted shut. Floating shelves put in bedroom, supports in wrong place, so they decide to cut the plasterboard out of adjacent wall to get the shelves to fit !
You know the score....you go to do a 1 hour job and it turns into a days labour to get it looking and working right. George Calin is dead right about people who should be killed...lol
