Hello All
I've mentioned a couple of times the Fawlty Towers disaster that was me yanking off the stop tap some years ago. Anyway, I'm now redoing the kitchen but of course that incoming pipe stays. I'm not 100% sure it is alkathene but I think it is? For various reasons I'm still a bit nervous about that stoptap which has led me on to asking the question:
What is the correct way to join copper pipe on to a 1970s alkathene plastic pipe ?

yes Dafty that is black alkathine, its called 1/2 inch because the bore is 1/2 inch the outside is 3/4 inch, So a 3/4 imperial compression with fit it or a black alk to 15mm stoptap, if you can get one, another tip is use 15mm copper for an insert,

RIght thats brilliant thanks Tom. So any 22mm compression fitting but using maybe an inch of 15mm pipe as an insert should work?
Steps: 1/ Remove existing tap from alkathene pipe leaving nut and olive on pipe 2/ check end of alkathene pipe and if no insert then push an inch of 15mm 3/ clean up and then wrap 2 or 3 turns of ptfe. maybe add some lsx for good measure 4/ Push on new valve or coupler and tIghten up as normal
Maybe though the old olive can be removed in the same way as from copper pipe so then can use a new olive?
I'm going to be updating my kitchen thread soon and you'll see why I'm worried about this fitting.....

no, the old fitting and the new fitting will have a different thread, you will have to cut the alkathen , put the new fitting cone and tighten it up good, then undo it and check the olive is stuck on the pipe, then wrap a couple of loops of ptfe, and retighten, then work up from there, a small bitt of 15mm then a new stoptap and ready for test,

AH, well spotted Tappy, I did't notice that till I enlarged the picture, yes that would work and you are not cutting the alkathene,

Thanks tappy. If the stoptap had seized that might be ideal but what I'm worried about is the previous leak right at the bottom where the pipe meets the old style nut. So if that gives me anymore trouble (or I drop another huge ceramic sink on it as I nearly did last week details to follow....) I'll go with Toms method. Shame there is no way to do it without cutting the pipe.

No prob's dd, it just seemed to me to be the best/easiest way to convert it.
Give that job to ten different plumbers and they'd more than likely all do it ten different ways.
