My way is to keep the pipes as near the back as possible and as straight as possible and branch to the tap as high as is practical, So if I was first fixing the hot and cold, the cold would be on the right and come out above the shelf 3 inches off the bowl centre, with the hot 6 inches away on the left,
I'll do a drawing. it speaks a 1000 words,
