I've seen BG men using a rubber hammer,
When I'm cleaning a dirty system I use a nylon mallet and a thin sheet of rubber between mallet and rad to vibrate rads to help loosen crud inside. Suppose it must do some good.

If a system is really clogged up, I use Olive’s Rampant Rabbit set on maximum. It certainly gets things moving & it excites the radiators enough for them to eject their dirty water at will!!!
