Hi. is there more than one type/size of rad valves? how can you tell which one you have?

Attachment Deleted You get this type on older rads and in different sizes. Then you get the compression type on the more modern rads. You have to swap the one above with a more modern one to fit a TRV. The one above is a Union type which works on compression without using an olive, between the large piece on the left tightened up against the valve with the large nut above.

yes cylunferfella i think its the big nut type with no olive. I have bought trv's, how do i go about fitting them

Remove existing tails from rad with a rad hex key or part of your set of footprints and replace with new tails. Only do one side if you're just wanting the TRV on. You might have to adjust pipe work if it's rigid. There will be a difference in matching up.

If you're like me you'll really struggle if the rads are old. I've got one rad I remember taking outside, applying heat and whacking the hex key with a mallet and I still couldn't get it to turn.
How old are your rads aj? Let us know how you get on.

I did a job about 3 years ago where the tail was stuck
Ended up swapping the rad.
