Firstly, sorry for all the questions recently - I'm planning out new bathroom.
Being a Dafty I'm thinking of turning the existing bath 180 degrees as it suits the layout of the room better with a new shower over the bath.
Now the joists are favorable - they run parallel with the length of the bath. But is it an option to connect into the existing 40mm pipe, put in a small vertical section to poke through the flooboards and then run a longer pipe to the new trap at the other end? Or should I try harder to run the pipe under the floorboards which is probably possible but maybe a bit harder ?

The harder way is the right way - doing it correctly will reduce flow obstructions which means the bath emptying won't be a problem going forward.

The golden basic rule regarding all waste pipe runs is to keep them as short as possible. How does this thinking fit in with your plan dd?
However, we do see unnecessary long runs of waste pipe all the time. I would say above the floorboards it will be much easier to support the long run of waste pipe and also put a steady fall on it than it will be under the floor. So if it's not in the way of anything I reckon it will be OK to do this
You don't want any back-fall on the waste pipe or it given the chance to sag in the future through not being able to clip it.

That's a good point about clipping/support Tappy. I can see that running it under the boards "looks" better but I'd need to make sure it doesn't cause any more bends and can be clipped along the joists. Under the bath I'm obvisouly freer BUT I'd need to look into clips that run along the floor. Or maybe just bang in some 4x2 on the floorboards?
It would add at least a 1M which isn't good BUT the existing drain goes round in a square after the trap before it goes down - about 3 or 4 elbos! (And it drains ok). I'll take a picture once I've got the bath out in a few days.
Problem is if I keep it this way round there is a window above the existing tap side of the bath so be hard to fit a shower screen etc.

as Tappy says, short as possible and falling all the way and for maintenance purposes, make sure you can get to them because, The best plumber in the world cannot stop hair loss and, it ends up in the bath , sink and shower and its trouble in the pipes,

Every job is different and certainly easier if you've seen it. However, what you need from the install is trouble free functionality.
Now if this is going to be rented out they'll treat it with minimal respect and should be build with that in mind.
It requires the bath framing out to fully support there romping around like a Blackpool B&B.

Not sure if we're selling or renting yet Battle but if there's any romping going on I'll need to get the shower head that has an integrated 4K camera. Will post up the footage....

As I recall, her name was Clare & she loved it up the Chocolate Speedway, especially in the Bath!! I picked her up in the Tower Ballroom, now she was a right dirty bitch!! Oh you southern softies have missed out on so much fun!!😎😎😎😎
