Hello all, thanks for the warm welcome on the last post. Despite my brand new account i've been part of this forum for a quite a while, although I only had one post on my old account which I believe was named ''eyyup''. I tend to just read and not comment Today I was thinking about why boilers have live and a switch live, obviously nowadays boilers have pump overrun which helps to get heat away from the boiler even after it's shut off. I've been to a few jobs during my apprenticeship where the boiler only had a switch live meaning as soon as the stat was turned off, all power cut off to the system, we just got sparkies down to fix that not something we get involved with at our company. Is there any other reasons why boilers have a switch live and a perm feed

Needed on certain installations for frost protection.

Times have changed and I'm going back to my early days when, The boiler was an appliance on a heating system, So the live went to the wiring centre and from there the controls were wired, In modern systems the boiler is the wiring centre and only external controls need wiring from it, frost stats, other levels, ufh and stuff, I've lost touch now,

Most heat only boilers need a permanent Live & switching supply. I say switching supply, as modern boilers can be controlled by traditional On/Off controls or ‘Bus/Open Therm’ type controls. Some Heat Only boilers don’t need a Per/L, Baxi springs to mind. While others like Ideal Logic use the Fan to cool the Heat Engine, after a demand is satisfying.
I’m delighted to answer any questions for an apprentice, we were all like you once & keen to learn. But hey, even for old cunts like me, every day is a Skool Day👍👍👍

The first run of low water content boilers (around the late 80s) we had to install a by-pass circuit in the heating system for the pump to dispense the heat when the boiler switched off. The old fashioned boilers with iron heat exchanges didn't need this.
It was normally just a loop of un-valved 22mm pipework close to the boiler or even a radiator on a separate circuit fitted with just the lock-shield valves. Some of the low water content boilers had this feature incorporated into them and didn't need this extra work done.
We never hear of any of this on modern combi's/system boilers these days. They are a whole new breed of boilers from the old ones.
Good post Cam - I'd almost forgotten about this little era of past plumbing/heating.

Were those originally badged as Thorns, Dick. Look after the plumbing for a pub (or used to) that until recently had the Olympic, which I believe is the Apollo's big brother. Boiler was never really touched, but kept going for decades.
