to avoid freezing up?
I've about a metre of 22 and about another metre of 15 all in a totally unheated space. They're insulated from memory but not with the really thick stuff and there's a very thin layer of wood sheet between them and outside.
So my questions is what are my chances of it bursting in the next few days as it will be zero even during the day? Would say one drip a minute - maybe a half a washing up bowl a day help? The 15 mil goes to a toilet so maybe it can expand through the valve there instead of bursting?
Anything else I can do - I can't easily access those pipes as they're underneath tiles and a toilet. I am running it once a day but feels like pissing in the wind.

My ex left the bath tap dribbling, so the cats could drink... Came home and water no longer running away, had frozen in the waste. -4/5 at the time. That winter got to -8. Unlagged pipes, all round, even in the crawl space, never had one burst.
Just an observation from a non plumber, but indoors, even not heated, is a lot warmer!

Well it works but you need to monitor the flow and if it decreases you've got to up the flow to prevent it freezing.
Or and as well up to your situation.
Put an incandescent (not fluorescent) light bulb place it as close as possible to the pipes and leave it on during cold weather. A 100-watt bulb makes a great little space heater. Make sure the light can’t get knocked over or set something on fire.

Might do that with the lamp. Thanks both.
Do you get many burst pipe situations in the winter like the insurance companies would have us believe? What sort of situations have you had them? Maybe more than we get down south?

In my area Yes for outside taps - plenty as the owners are to lazy to turn the iso's off, but not many within buildings what aren't neglected eg doors and windows shut.

Mind that's cheap - I wonder what the quality is like?

Doesn’t your boiler kick in at a low temperature?
Mine will kick in at 5° & at my new gaff the default is 9°.
That’s pretty chilly but if you’re out you don’t want it toasty.

I did a job for a right tosser a few years ago, he was in a wheelchair & had such a shitty attitude he had no friends, no one wanted to know him, he told me, after I did the job I could see why, I couldn’t stand the prick. anyway, he told me he used to buy shit from the pound shop but keep it in the wrapper & return it. What a tosser.

another hack i remember when i was a lad and we had an outside lavy was to light a candle under the lead pipes, it worked well, its not enough heat to melt the lead, just enough to stop it freezing, It would work on copper too, use those little stumpy tea lights they sell in B and M shops for £1 for a bag full,

These are water pipes feeding the annex which is not in use at the moment. I suppose ideally I'd drain down but the tee for the annex is under the floor in the bathroom so there is no iso valve for that bit. <insert embarrassed smiley but there isn't one > Got me thinking which is dangerous for a Dafty. Are compression fittings more susceptible than other types because even a slight expansion of the pipe might kink the olive? I suppose you've never had time to look at any of these outside tap failures in any detail - does the tap itself go, the connection to it or the pipe?

She could squirt for Scotland too - fill the bottle or hit the ceiling!!! One of life’s lessons; if she’s good in the sack, she’ll be high maintenance or just a complete nutter!!
