A customer wants a new toilet & the original 60’s pipe is clay going into cast iron stack.
I can see how far the clay pipe goes as everything is boxed in.
Would the clay go from toilet pan to cast iron pretty much immediately or might it be clay pipe to the stack?
Also, if the clay is only from toilet pan to cast would you suggest cutting some of the cast away and then fitting a Fernco to plastic for the new toilet waste?
Lastly, if fitting a Fernco to cast would you use any silicone or other sealant or just tighten it up as much as possible? I would want toilet water leaking behind the scenes.
Cheers all

It wouldn’t be uncommon for a Clay Socket sticking through the floor, with an S trap WC connected to it. But Clay Drains generally were all underground.

I have to agree with Dich, clay is underground only, Any clay pipe above ground is the work of a DIY er or bearswoodBrown, Its just not done, rip it out and use plastic and McAlpine connectors,

Ok. So it must be cast to the toilet from the stack which is internal.
The old pan connector is one of those old clay (?) ones.
I’ll cut it out somewhere & go cast to plastic.
Cheers all

Mate, to my uncertain knowledge, there’s no such thing as a Clay WC connector. They went from Lead to Plastic really. Or as I stated above. On some old Lead Soil pipes, 3 1/2” or 4”, you may have a County Council WC connector. This was Brass & Wipe soldered to the Lead Soil pipe. Call such as they were a higher spec & generally used on Council Housing, certainly in Scotland anyway.

Or are the cement or something?

Could be asbestos going into a bottom length of cast iron rocky. A fairly common thing to do in that era.
