so Im cutting out a live water main, there's no stop tap in the street, its been tarmaced over, No one knows where it is, So I dug down where the old lead main is Attachment Deletedthen twatted the pipe with two hammer, one at the back and one at the front |

thats completely against water bylaws because I'm leaving a 'dead leg', the water board are not interested if you ask them to de connect from the old common main So whats a man supposed to do  ??  |

the water main is live so if you cut it you get wet, and as there's no way of turning it off you're in deep trouble, So by smashing the lead pipe together with two hammers you squash the lead and stop the water coming through it, So then its safe to cut downstream of it and cap it, Attachment Deleted |

yes squash it but don't rely on 'hope', open the tap if its still running squash some more  i know I should't be digging, i put £100 on the bill and he asked why so dear, He'll be sure its dug out next time,,,, smiley-laughing021 |

I'm puzzled how do you get the water to flow again if you've sealed it by squashing it - I known you've do work down stream which is now flow free but it's got to be unsealed to allow the water flow again? i mean I know you could freeze it to allow the squashed section to be removed after all the work was done but still puzzled. |

Now Its getting a bit clearer - so he's got a new main in plastic with an isolator for that but not the original lead main so that dead headed for the next poor fucker on a spade.
