Hello All
So, a customer asked me about gas usage.
She’s got a nice house, modern boiler & unvented set up.
She asked me about her gas usage which isn’t particularly high.
At present she has hot water & heating on in the morning. All ok.
She then is of the opinion that if she turns the water on again along with the heating in the afternoon/evening it’ll cost her more money that just turning the heating on in the afternoon.
So, she’s got a S plan system.
I’ve done a bit of research & have told her that she’s not using more gas for both heating & hot water but someone has told her she’ll use more.
I’ve tried to explain to her that all it is is a valve opening to heat the water while the heating is on but she’s adamant that there’s more gas being used.
Do anyone have a way to satisfy her that she’s not using more gas?
She’s a nice lady but I’m now finished with my job & I want out without a million phone calls after I leave!!!
Cheers all.

" set it and forget it" Is a phrase they like to hear, Let the stats run the system, that is their job, Once the cylinder is heated, The stat turns it off so you are no longer heating the water unless you use the hot water, It will then reheat it and turn it off when reheated,

Well she's right, it will use more gas with both working but if the stat turns the hot water off then its stopped working, if she can't grasp that, you are pissing in the wind, she might have dementia or just a low achiever , either way You can only explain it as clear as you can and move on, Maybe leave some bumf from google for here to read,

Sometimes it just needs a third party to tell them before they believe you. Other times just agreeing with them is far easier (just let them think that they are correct). I don't miss this type of customer one little bit!

The type of controls & boiler has a huge bearing on her overall Gas consumption Rocky. Latest grey thinking is Priority Hot Water & more finite control of CH. Of course her HW consumption will be relevant. Regardless, there’s very little chance when the boiler is heating HW from cold, that the boiler will condense, it’ll run full pelt with a cold cylinder.
Modern homes don’t use a lot of HW, with Cold Fill Washing Machines, DW’s & Showers etc etc.
A condensing boiler efficiency will be infinitely better when just ticking over & modulating down. So permanently topping up the cylinder & the CH running at a lower temperature, will greatly improve economy.
Open Therm controls, with Weather Compensation is really the best way to control a Condensing Boiler.
Standard S Plans are purely switching an ‘On/Off’ system, with the minimum of boiler modulation.
Another thing to reduce boiler cycling on CH is the actual Boiler Output, lots of boilers can have their output reduced(Range Rated).

I once replaced a couple of MVs and the new ones had neon's on them which the customer didn't like saying that they would cost her extra electricity. "Who's going to pay?" she would complain to the gaffer. Some right idiots are out there or as tom says they could have some medical condition unbeknown at the time! I've also been sent to oversee a newly installed electric shower installation and a new gas central heating installation by the gaffer even though I wasn't part p reg for the electrics or gasafe reg for the gas at the time. The over nervous customers had driven the gaffer up the wall! Psychology ought to feature in the training of plumbers !
