Hello
Does anyone have any experience connecting onto a main sewer?
The sewer in operation runs alone a number of properties & so is always live.
I might need to get a soil pipe from an extension to connect to the main sewer.
Never done it so looking for some experiences on how it’s done.
I’ve no idea what it’s made of but I’m assuming it’s clay for a 1960’s council terrace.
Cheers all

you need to make a ' man hole' dig down to the existing sewer pipe, bring your new soil pipe at a slightly higher level, Cut the existing sewer pipe half way with a grinder at two places to form a open entry for the new pipe, Build up with cement to form 'benching', This will all need an airtight surrounding and is quite a job, I would recommend you ask round some groundworkers for quotes,

Whilst I've no experience of ever connecting a drain to a sewer I have remembered something called an interceptor trap from my days at collage. A plumber I once worked with back in my apprentice days once descended a meatal ladder into a deep manhole with some drain rods and unscrewed that stopper to rod the drain. I would say that the job of sewer connection is more civil engineering than plumbing work rocky.

If a Drain takes more than two houses, then it’s a Sewer. A Sewer is adopted by your Local Water Authority, Thames Water etc etc. A connection to said Sewer must be done with the permission of the Water Authority & a Disconnect Manhole my be required on the Clients property & also a Large Manhole at the connection itself.
Generally sized 150mm & above’ with Heavy Manhole covers, a sewer is easily identified. A meeting with your local inspector would be your first move, this’ll establish their requirements & specifications.
A connection to a domestic drain, should be done with the authority & inspection of your LABC inspector. If a project has a Drainage connections, a Building Warrant will normally be required.
