I got a call from an old mate who I did a few jobs for over the years, he has a leaking plastic elbow under a radiator, Because he has troubles at home with his missus, I felt sorry for him and went out to help him,

"Have you got a couple of push fits tappy"? A new starter at work once said to me. I replied slightly embarrassed "I never use them"! Not entirely true I've used flexi's on taps and the odd push fit in difficult access places but they were never a first go to item. It would certainly be a huge problem for the trade if it was discovered that they did start to fail after say 20 years.

Aren't they _now_ the first thing a plumber would reach for as he's likely fitting plastic pipe all over the place ?

There’s a social housing project up here not quite twenty years old and all the plastic heating pipes are failing and now being replaced with copper pipework and fittings. The failures all show as minor leakage if the area of fitment is allowed to get around 0 degrees - the technical department says the rubbers are shrinking in the cold causing the leakage.

Push Fit plastic tube & fittings have been around for Donkeys years now, but like anything with an O Ring, it’s only as good as the O Ring!!..........Remember back in the early 80’s, 40 years ago, we were throwing in Barton Acorn Brown/Black Tube & fittings, but the Tube had no barrier & O2 would ingress through the wall of the tube & rot your CH system!!! Around that time there was 90% Council Grants for improvement to old Tenement Blocks of Flats, so miles & miles of the stuff was used in these Flats. You can commonly still come across it & it’s still 100% OK on Hot & Cold Systems.
Makes me laugh, all these Plumber Poofs with their fancy, expensive Press Fit Tools & fittings. Little do they appreciate, they’re depending on an O Ring, just like Plastic Push Fit...........But these poofs are paying 3 times more for the privilege😂😂😂
Its just an O Ring problem Thomas, happens all the time. We can Pressure Test a PF Plastic system to 16Bar & still get a leaking fitting 6 months later.
Luckily, most of the systems on New Builds are in the Ceiling, so cutting a patch in Plasterboard & repairing it is all it takes👍👍
Golden Rule; never bury Push Fit in somewhere you can’t get easy access👍👍👍

Or maybe it will be boom time for plumbing over the next few years, a push fit dividend.... endless work replacing the leaking fittings

Lead Pipe, Truwel Pipe, Stainless Steel Pipe, Bartol Acorn Pipe, Asbestos Pipe, UV damaged Plastic Pipe.......etc etc etc, the list is endless!!! Of Course, at the early stages of these material failures, it’s the Installers fault, never the manufacturers!......Oh no, their product isn’t shit, it’s a revolution in the Plumbing industry!!
