Dickie, don’t take it personally, but your post said only “competent “ people can work on gas appliances/ installations. I think you should have said only “Qualified and certificated “ people can work on gas appliances / installations. That’s a lot clearer dear boy. 😉😉

But hey, if I can charge an OAP £150 to relight her pilot, I’m happy👍👍👍

I'm with JJ on this one for someone who has worked with gas for lets say 40 years and decided not to renew their gas-safe (for whatever reason) membership anymore does not suddenly become incompetent in gas fitting. Although granted this is the word that we now use for someone who has let their gas-safe membership expire.
Incidentally, The A in SKETUA stands for "Attitude (a good one)" and how many qualified gas-safe members do you come across who have a bad one?

Cheers crowfoot for your support. As I said to Sir Richard of Weegie, it’s not simply a case of saying someone has to be competent, when he really means qualified. The law says you have to be competent, therefore the law needs wording differently, to change that one word, to qualified.

Dick also states " if you are doing gaswork for profit" which can also be a grey area, If you did a job for free or priced it wrong and made fuck all, then you're ok in the eyes of the law ,

There’s also the aforementioned case of the DaftyDIYer doing Gas Work & removing the side of his home. His House Insurance will not pay out. It’s not just the Law that’ll bang him up, him & his family have lost their home!!
So just cough up, £150/hr for an experienced Gas Safe Engineer is not unreasonable.

But they might get someone who will charge them £150 to light their pilot. Or even worse someone who is totally incompetent but still a GS member. How do they know?

When it's put like that £150 sounds very cheap. Will the public be happy to pay the same amount to be water-safe in the near future though? Poisoned water is the easiest way to kill off an entire population!! I reckon you'll have to double that £150 figure for a water-safe registered plumber in the very near future.

Ah, this is the problem Dafty, you don’t know who’re getting!! A six week course cowboy or career change chancer. However, with the many faults of Gas Safe. You do have some recourse.

It’s arse for elbow here in the UK. We should be like many other countries & have a Licensing Scheme for all aspects of our Trade.

Plumbing and sparks at the top. So don't disagree with that. BUT: I obvisouly do think there should be a route for any determined DIYer to get a ticket without spending weeks on the job gaining experience. Maybe a special crappy "DIY" pass that allows work in your own house. A £250 3 day course maybe. I dunno - not really thought it through....

Dafty, I may be wrong here because, I've lost touch with regs and rules but, I believe working on you own house as a diy er is totally ok, This is backed up by , B+Q, screwfix, toolstation being allowed to sell boilers and spares to Joe public, I know you might get a jobsworth counter rat saying, " sorry mate I need to see you card", in another store a differant counter rat with say, " a sale is a sale and my sales figures will get me noticed ", Yes sir here's your boiler,, Anyone know the last time a diyer blew a house up ?

Yeah would be interesting to know what was the actual cause of those 1 in 10 million houses that get blown up from a gas leak. Whisper it but maybe some of them are due to gas safe engineers !

On average there’s over 40 Gas Exploitations in British Homes every year. A significant number!! Now that’s just explosions, not CO poisonings etc. So if you want to take the side of your home out or kill your family, carry on!! Anyone want some of these Fan Bearings, let me know👍👍
