Hi guy's Just to Confirm my thoughts please !!! I have a customer with a water softener fitted as the water enters the house been there for some time no problems what so ever all good But the other day this guy rings me and says that he has a problem,,,when he turns on the cold water tap at the kitchen sink the water has become murky but after a while it clears and the same with the Hot tap as well, and also his overflow in the loft is running but at this time not sure which tank is overflowing as I have not been round to check... but I think it will be the header tank overflowing as I fitted a new ball valve in the main cold tank about 6 moths ago,,, So my thoughts of what's happening is the hot water cylinder internal coil has broken down and is contaminating the hot water and needs to be changed Can anyone out there concur with my thoughts ... this guy is away on holiday at the moment and Iam expecting him back this week So what are your thoughts Please !!!

there's every chance you're right but, that would not account for the cold water in the sink to go murky, this could happen because of works on the water mains and could also be why the hot was murky too, you can check it its the cylinder by isolating the header tank for the heating, it the water continues to overflow,,,its defo the cylinder coil,

I remember when i first started out, i got a job to change a indirect H/W/C. Customer had a quote From british gas who diagnosed a faulty cylinder coil. Anyway changed the cylinder and customer called back its still overflowing. Turned out customer had a mixer valve fitted with no check valves and The cold was going back through the hot and up the vent. Well embarrassed. and before anyone says it yes i should have checked.

Hi Guy's thanks for the replies .... Hi Tom you say to check if its the coil by isolating the header tank then if the water still overflows then its defo the cylinder the only way I know how to isolate the header tank is to bung the outlet pipe from the tank then tie up the ball float ...so then you are saying if the water comes up through the vent pipe its defo the cylinder .....That's correct YES !!!! hope that's what you meant ........

no just tie up the ballvalve, if its the coil it will come in the tank through the cold feed and rise the water level in the tank,
