Oh god I feel for you Tom, those are the worst jobs, you either end up hacksawing in about 2'' of space or using the multitool and deafening yourself for a week. Most common on basins/baths with square holes I find.

I don't rate them blue tap spanners, they fit first time then are too loose on backnuts, I'm sure the spanner ends bend after using them. I've got a cracking long arm tap spanner, the spring loaded kind, it's a bit bulky for some jobs but it's spot on if you can fit it in. No idea where I got it from though, had it since my college days...

thats the one JC, square holes, I'm still sore from thrutching under the bath getting a 1/8th of a turn using my crowsfoot and a little adjuster to lever it round before it broke, i was at it from 9.30am till 3.00pm I quoted £80 and the customer had the £80 ready when i finished, He knew i'd struggled my bollocks off and did't give me a chance to say anything, just handed me the money while i was tiding up, I did't even get a cup of tea out of him,
lovely day,,, smiley-whacky086 fan shit

When I was on't council, my gaffer sent me to one house to replace the washers on a leaking sink tap (yeah typical council, send a fookin joiner just because he's got a tool box) Got there and try as I might I just couldn't undo the top of the tap. Must have been in years. Gaffer came out, undone the whole tap and got me to replace the whole fookin tap. Only problem was , now the t'other tap didna match.

My mums basin needed cleaning, ex council 1960's
So my bro in law takes the basin to the garden. I clean it up 100%, looked great, brand new.
He decides my mum needed new tap, big mistake, wouldn't budge, I'm holding the basin as he's trying to undo tap, crack, yep, nearly lost a finger, 8hrs in A&E, rubbish, had a tear in my hand.
After a week it was still apart so my Vietnam training took over & I super glued the deep cut together, simple.
