We've all been there; Dot n Dab, plasterboard partition etc etc........& we want to run a load of pipes- horizontal or vertical, so we fix a 'pipe board', but shit!! There's no studs where we want to fix our board!! This guy is the Master, Porcupine fixings....14.45 on the following video, in fact watch the whole video - you'll not be disappointed; I notice he says they use 15" centres in the States yet we use 14 or 16 centres unless things have changed for these new houses getting built?

I think they're on 16" centres or centers for a 4' wide sheet.
We're normally 400 or 600mm for a 1.2M sheet.

Here's a sort of tool tip, well, sort of!! Im always getting the piss taken out of me because of my poofy wee 3M measuring tape, to which I always say; Not may pipes longer than 3M & I can poke it through a hole cut for a 15mm pipe, so fuck you!! Also, I've started just clipping my wee tape to my belt, I'll even tape it on if I'm working at heights. Pull it out measure, mark & cut....simple!! It never falls or I don't lose it, it just retracts into my belt. Of course for marking out bathrooms or anything large I'd use my 5 or 8M tape. But it's amazing how you can get a day's work done with a wee tape!! Try it chaps..........

I'll take that into the studio Dick, Although i was taught in my ACS days that fairy is a no no on gas because it rots seals, I dunno if thats true or just scaremongery to make us buy the £5 a pop leak detector, So I'll be ecomomic about the soap bit to keep the 'I'm a gas engineer now I've paid for a gassafe bdge' brigade off my back,,

Whats wrong with the old lighter flame under the joint to check for gas leaks, laughing-dog-smiley-emoticon Well, a lighter will go out with a 'poof' if you use it to test for an air leak EF!!

Whats wrong with the old lighter flame under the joint to check for gas leaks, laughing-dog-smiley-emoticon That's exactly how I was shown to test for gas leaks by my boss back in the day. Unthinkable nowadays to think that's how we all did it back then. We would use the gauge as well I hasten to add.

Yes I was shown that one too. It was introduced to me as "another method" you can use (watching the needle for 10 mins ).

OK, here's another wee daft one; 45 + 45 = 90 OK? So when you're fitting foam pipe insulation around a copper elbows, you need a 45degree mitre, easy, measure the outside diameter of you pipe insulation, so say it's 22+13+13 = 48mm (13 being the insulation wall & 22 the tube size). Measurewhere you want to cut & mark the short end of the mitre, then mark 48mm from there. Cut between the two lines & you have a perfect 45degree mitre.
For a 45degree joint just measure the radius of the pipe insulation, mark & cut.......Bingo!!
