I would make my game plan around if the grub screw come out to allow disassembly.

I've had another look at it DD and it's not the tap I thought it was, there's a shower connection underneath!
It now looks to me like a monobloc bath/shower mixer!!!!
I've never seen one before!
It's a real plumbing oddity and if that's what it is it fully deserves a place in the plumbing museum of plumbing obscurities and oddity's over the years!
Sorry 'bout that DD with the 3/4" cartridge now seems like bad advice!

Sorry 'bout that DD with the 3/4" cartridge now seems like bad advice! Was working on an even more odd bath tap today, same as that but a deck mono bath/shower mixer. As luck would have it, I've had an unusual monobloc cartridge in one of my bags for about a year after I bought it online to try and repair a monobloc tap last year but it didn't fit. Well it fit the beast tap I was working on today so was in and out and finally paid for the cart I've been carrying around for a year The old cartridge came out in pieces and there were no ISO's under the bath so was bloody lucky...

Infact, here's a video of it that the customer sent me when they first contacted me.

Its starting to sound like I should bite the bullet and replace it.....(and probably the bath too!) Many thanks anyway for taking the time.

Turn water off. Open some taps to drain down. (Not needed if you have ISOs under the bath. Pop the little cap off the top of the handle. (unless there's a hole for an alan key/screwdriver at the back, then undo that) Undo the screw and pull the handle off - it may be pretty stuck so persevere with it. there will be a brass 'nut' about an inch and a quarter holding the cart in place, undo that and pull the cartridge out. Take it to a merchants and see if they have a direct replacement. Screwfix do a couple of sizes too, pretty cheap - I think about £8. If you can't get a replacement then it's new tap time, but you can put it back together if needed for now. Don't over tighten the nut when you're putting it back together, and a bit of silicone grease on the rubber seals won't be wasted.

I'm pretty sure the cartridge will look something like that when you get the cartridge out, however, it's such an old tap I'm pretty convinced it won't fit the type of tap that you're trying to repair. That plastic cartridge will have been made to fit something though (another museum piece)!

Never thought there was so much to know just about taps but like all plumbing the more you know the more there is to know! Looks like I've been let down on some tile adhesive (looked like a cracking deal www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264140410248 but nothing has turned up yet) so I might get some time sooner than I thought to get the cartridge out. Thanks again all !
