we have gas central heating with a old type boiler and hot water tank set up, a couple of years ago I changed the wall thermostat from a old one to a Salus digital one mainly because I thought it would look better (but didn't realise the blue back light only came on when pressed ) anyway you need a degree to operate the thing it has 4 on/off periods every day and the relay is loud ,to be frank the wife hates it 'don't know why you changed it in the first place ' & 'I don't know how to work that bloody thing' etc etc you know the song, anyway in the meantime we have invested in Alexa because we are to idle to go round switching on/off the lights manually and I have noticed they now do wifi wall thermostats that work with she who must not be named(as youtube paul hibbert says)and your smart phone,Id prefer to leave the wall thermostat in place rather than have a portable one and this seems to fit the bill 'Qiumi Smart WiFi Thermostat' £30 on Amazon but you seem to be able to get it as low as £14 quid off ebay. Anyone have any thoughts on this make or similar ?

over my head mate, I like things kept simple, I put a normal 'dial type' stat on the wall 0 = off and 30 = high, then you just set it to a temp thats comfortable for you,

thanks Tom and glowbug,to be honest that's what I took off and now I'm after the same thing except wifi controlled as well, central heating control does seem to be getting more and more sophisticated with Nest and Hive but they're quite expensive but I can see you need reliability as a installer - I saw the DRAYTON Wiser TRV Radiator Valve - £21.59 at Wolseley thread on hot deals uk which people are raving over (but you seem to need a special wifi hub for these?) and it triggered the wifi wall thermostat thought.

All the new stuff is interesting but you can get some crazy faults - recently had to change a wifi controller on a job as the punters neighbours garage door controller was changing the desired settings. Additionally I had a customer with an Oxford car charger/conditioner which when on in the garage interfered with the Worcester boiler (also located in the garage)both items worked perfectly, just not together no reason found!

I put in a nest because I "borrowed" it from my old work when they were researching "smart" stuff. I've since turned off ALL the predicitive artificial inteligence stuff. Who wants a computer to learn your habbits wrong and stick the heating on at 3am for example as it did ? As a dumb wifi device it behaves well and looks good. I'm now just setting up a new area for a lodger which I'd want to be controlled seperately. I bought this. Hasn't arrived yet but looked like a bargain. My main criteria was not to have a battery operated model ! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TPOne-M-087N785200/163649477614

The big advantage of Digital Room Thermostats over normal ‘clicky’ On/Off analogical ones is the hiatus.

That's interesting - I'd not heard of it. I think though you can still get some of the benefits of a smart thermostat without it though - i.e. you can turn your heating on when you're on your way home and you can check if anyone in the house has put the heating on too high.... So with Opentherm, the thermopstat doesn't just say "turn on now" "turn off now" it tells the opentherm boiler "please turn heating up to 20 degrees within slowly/quickly/eco/etc " then the boiler uses some intelligence to either get the house up to temp as fast as possible or maybe slower if that saves on gas. Have I got that right? If so, sounds like a lot of expensive technology to gain a tiny amount ? (and sell more boilers and controls)

You are completely right, you really don't need anything fancy but the fact these gadgets are produced encourages people to get them and if they catch on it starts to become the norm,at the risk of getting a verbal beating we got a echo dot and one smart plug and now use it to switch all our 10 downstairs living/dining/kitchen side lights and on the rare occasion the internet buggers up it becomes a chore to switch them all off manually, whereas before it was just something you did .
