Had about 2 hour's grace in which I could turn off the water (yes like everything else in this house plumbing has been bashed together so no local isolator valve). Soaked it in vinegar (didn't have bi-carb) and opened and closed it a few times whilst soaking.
Put it back (a real ball ache getting that right) and its definitely better than before. Only needs to last a year or so before I do up that bathroom so hopefully its good enough. If it starts causing trouble again, I'll leave it all night soaked in something.
Worst case replace it but at least I know what I'm up against now.

Fair point but I'd need to get the bath panel off its actually next to the airing cupboard where the main CW/HW isolators are so decided not to.

DD I use bicarbonate soda cause I've got a 20kg bag for other jobs I do but the best gear is baking soda as its the same only it has citric acid in it.
