I've been through quite a few drayton heads over the years (za5 or za6?). The relay seems to stick open so the valve shuts but the electrics still keep the pump on. The HW is on a 22mm and I changed that to a honeywell about 3 years ago and so far no problem. Maybe the metal body helps to radiate the heat out of it I dunno.
The heating side is a drayton on a 28mm and its again giving me trouble. I know somethings up because at night I'll come upstairs and here the pump running. If I turn the heating on/off that usually fixes it.
Anyway, even though they're not cheap, would I be advised to replace the 28mm valve (body and head) to maybe honeywell?

Certainly a much better valve Dafty. Honeywell are the Dog’s Ballox when it comes to motorised valves.

Yeah people like to change the heads only
Better to change it all I say
Especially in your own house

thats absolutely right rocky, Its possible the head burned out because it was struggling to turn the spindle, In that case the new head will burn out too, if you change the full valve, you can't go wrong, call backs are a pain we can live without,

Often some bargains on Ebay, especially if you can nurse the old one until the warmer months. In the past I've bought Honeywells from Ebay for van stock, sometimes small job lots at less than half retail prices.

Found this but doesn't state the model number so I don't know if its the normally closed one which I think I need or the one with compression each end. (Honeywell website says there's different variants) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402116637251

well from my experience, they are all normally closed, I've never seen or heard of a ' compression each end' but, I might think that's a equilateral valve, which is for high pressure ( mains water) control, central heating are not high pressure,

According to honeywell some have BSP 3/4" or BSP 1" ? heatingcontrols.honeywellhome.com/products/Valves/Motorised-Valves/V4043-Motorised-Valves/The guy came back to me and said it is normally closed but I'm thinking it could still have connections I'm not used to.

The Honeywell normally Closed valve is the V4043H
The Honeywell normally Open valve is the V4043B

Well I've bought it.
I asked the seller simply "Hello, could you please give me the model number" and he just replied "...its the normally closed one...". Hopefully not a huge risk but got it anyway.
"Looking forward" to cleaning off 40 years of gloss paint on those fat pipes and plumbing it in. I've got a second 22mm to go in as well. I'd actually sort of enjoy it if it wasn't for the wife and mother-in-law pecking at me to get it finished. Won't help that I probably won't start 'till 11am and all the stores I use are closing early.

As far as I know the DD the permanent open zone valve is only used on solid fuel central heating primary circulation pipes (28mm). These are the only one's that I have ever come across.
It's another HEATAS regs' balls up of course (don't ask)!!
