Why are they so cheap? www.landlord-certificates.co.uk/gas-certificates/Would I actually be paying for someone to quote me for a new boiler? "....ooh I can't possibly issue a safety certificate for such an old boiler...." (Ideal rd1 3100) Also is there anything obvious I should check beforehand that could be fixed to prevent a legitimate fail?

I'm guessing they are ' foot in the door' salesmen, you invite them in thinking you're getting a cheap cert but, they then tell you your system is unsafe but fortunately, they can fix it for a cost, sharks,

Yeah that's what I was worried about.
I'm not a landlord but just thinking of letting my house out to go away for some time.
I have to say that for 30 quid, its _almost_ low enough to put in a hidden camera and post the footage back here for a proper review. I 'd be too worried though they might try and sabotage my heating in some way to show me how unsafe it is.....

Death of a Salesman!!! The clue is in the word ‘from’!!!
’But your Ad said it was 30 quid’??!!!
’No, my Ad said it was ‘from’ 30 quid’!!! ’Pay up arse hole’!!!!

Scroll down a bit and it's not that cheap.
The £30.00 is just for the gas meter only. £25.00 just for cleaning out the magna filter! 5 minute jobs.
£60.00 for the boiler service is about the going rate though.

I paid around 100 and that was maybe 8 years ago. Was a friendly local chap and all he said at the end was "...I've checked and cleaned it out but to be honest your boiler doesn't need much doing to it ....

They probably take 20 mins maximum A lot of engineers will book in a load to do & bang them out. Good money

It’s not a service & if there’s a problem you’ll get charged & failed then they’ll probably quote to fix it!!!! .....

Totally agree Rocky.
Id do a Poke n Print for £60. Maybe do a full FAGS if the boiler is not manky or old. full strip down service £120, plus seals etc if required.
now, if you didnt understand any of the above, good!! How are we going to charge a fortune if we reveal the Dark Arts???!!!!

How do I know I've got a reputable gas engineer doing the job and not one looking to condemn a boiler so he can quote for a new one ? Any tips on what to check before he arrives? Poke and print for 60 seems very reasonable.

We’d need more details of your boiler Dafty, I don’t recognise that model?!
If we know the boiler, then we can advise on the best method of service👍

If there’s nothing wrong with the boiler & you know it then you’ve got no problems The problems start with homeowners asking for LL certs & services knowing there’s faults & not being up front. Just because someone takes the front panel off to have a look doesn’t mean there’s going to be issues.

There's nothing wrong with it as far as I know but I could imagine dickpuller taking sharp intake of breath and saying "...for your load, you've got 600mm of 15mm pipe there....needs to have 22mm right up to the boiler....I'm surprised it hasn't blown up by now.....". Or worse, he whips out his FGA and says "....the noxos hydroxide peroxide manoxide is giving a reading of a gazillion million. Bloody dangerous that....."

I’ve never known anyone having anything dodgy like that If there’s something imminently dangerous they’ll cap the gas If there’s something not up to regs they’ll note it & tell you If there’s nothing you know that’s wrong or bodged there’s nothing to worry about Have you had it serviced regularly or recently? If so, you’d know if it wasn’t to current standard.
