I stayed in a cottage with ground source heating. Wasn't that effective and bloody noisy. Had to switch it off at night to get to sleep.
Also I'm taking applications for my new company 'Hydrosafe'. Please send a cheque for £4000 to me which will cover your lessons, test and ID card complete with mugshot. This time next year, I'll be a millionaire!
Ground Source is the quiter of the two units with just the err gental hum of the compressor, with air source you can add the noise of a huge fan to that, starting up (usually at 4.00am) in the morning in order to get the hot water up to temperature before the househpld wakes up!! Get three or four of the units close together and it sounds like an airplane taking off .

I fitted Vaillant ASHPs recently & they were very quiet. You only knew they were on by feeling the cold air at the unit. Hybrid system in £1.5M new builds. ASHP, buffer tank & Ideal Heat Only Gas Boilers. All running low temperature central heating. Huge designer radiators in public rooms & some rooms with huge K3 Stelrads.

Pity anyone in flats who is forced to have these things. Imagine 6, 8 or 10 flats with them.

What about the millions of boilers in situ? They still need service & repair. True, but things tend to happen pretty quickly once you cut the supply of new goods. How many incandescent light bulbs do you see these days or CRT TVs (the old box shape ones)

How many incandescent light bulbs do you see these days or CRT TVs (the old box shape ones) Existing gas boilers will be easily converted to hydrogen. A Telly or Light Bulb is small Beer when you consider a £6-12K heat Pump Install!! Regardless, us Plumbing & Heating artisans will be there, working our arse off & making a fortune. One of our apprentices is a pal of one of my nephews, my nephew was invited into the Trade. ’Come & learn the Dark Arts’ I said to him, but no, his Mummy & Daddy are Lefties, insisted he went to Uni. Our apprentice(now tradesman) sometimes picks him up in his top of the range BMW, from his job in McDonalds. His Degree in Media Studies has not lead to a job, well, apart from Burger Flipping in McDonalds. Our Trade is Hard, Skilled & very rewarding. You’ll make a great living for most of your life.

I actually agree with a lot of that. University should be for: Doctors Dentists Lawyers Top flight engineers A very, very few places for the students who excel countrywide in their field for stuff like history, philosophy etc etc A few more but still limited places for useful subjects like maths, physics, bio-chemistry etc Then we need to spend the money saved on pointless uni places on decent apprenticeships. Make engineering and other trades something to look up to. And in school we need some more practical "basics of the trades" lessons that everyone does. They don't even teach really basic stuff like screws, fixings, bits etc etc so people don't know how to properly fix to a wall or even what walls are made of..... There is so much basic stuff that could be taught but isn't .

I agree Dafty, practical skills are just not on the curriculum in Skools these days, so sad!! When I was in Skool we learned so much more, I could Hot Wire & steal a car at the tender age of 9. In Secondary Skool we got Woodwork, Tech Drawing & Metalwork. Our education system in Scotland 50 years ago was without question one of the best in the world. The SNP morons have destroyed it!!!😡😡😡😡
My two sons both have degrees & good jobs. Now, in their late 20’s & home owners, it’s a very steep learning curve for them when it comes to DIY. Strangely, both use CM & not millimetres when measuring!!

How many incandescent light bulbs do you see these days
Quite a lot in my place, because the enviro ones are shite. Especially for reading. Got a good supply of 40 and 60 watts, and they are still available if you know where to look. My parents have still got one of those extra large 100W bulbs that were available years ago. It's in their garage where it's been providing light since the late 60s. Whatever you do - don't tell the tree huggers. Or they'll get raided by an eco storm trooper SWAT team.
Every time I put my lights on polar bears die. According to Greta Thunderthighs.

Surely you can't credit your school with those skills, Dick. More likely something that was learnt out and about in The University Of Life.
Then again, if it's Glasgow maybe they do teach these type of skills.

Each to his own I'm not _that_ bothered by all this green milarkly. But with a lot of lights and spots in the house what I do is chose the highest possible wattage bulb I can find - then it works ok. So if the "standard" baynot fitting bulb is say 11W in the shops, I'll make sure mine is at least 20W. For GU10 downlights, they sell "standard" at about 3W but anything 5W or 6W will be very bright and best thing is especially if you fitted the downlights yourself, you don't need to worry about fire too much as they run warm. Oh last point is I hate turning lights on/off all the time. With 5W bulbs costing a penny a year you just don't worry about it.

Same here about the green nonsense. It's just another way for the authorities to control us and brain wash the gullable. "Recycle your Tenants Super cans, stay under your kitchen table at home during lockdown, be nice to darkeys, 'cos BLM you know!" Overbearing state controlling the unthinking. They say jump and the sheep will ask how high?
Anyway, I digress. One concession I made to melting Polar ice caps was to change the halogen GU10s for LED because I reasoned that anything that was giving out that much heat must be using some real juice. Anyway, I didn't know until I went to fit the new LEDs, but found out the bulbs aren't replaceable. Few years later and they're blowing. So not only have I probably save zilch because I now need to buy whole new LED fittings again, but I have to install them again. Rather than just fitting new bulbs like we used to. Wonder if I still have the old halogens in the loft?
This green stuff is never worth the effort.

I've fitted a few and agree they a great - the lightening off them is wow. However, as Woody said in another post shame about this green stuff when they get a fault it's change the whole assembly.

They tracking ground source heat pump conversions are £15k
It ain’t gonna happen
Unless they’re massively subsidised.
