The photo on the bottom o fthe previous page is the replacement fireplace. the gas fire that is going to be fitted is a different one from that photo. It isn't an inset gas fire.

ok stage one, that brass fitting on the left hand side, Take the screwed cap off with a screw driver, inside is another screw, screw that screw down clockwise, that will shut off the gas to the fire, for safety, turn the gas off at the meter first, then remove the fire,

remove the fire, there may be screws , just try pulling it, if it slides out alls well but if won't move, look for screws through the back and maby feet too,

Once its free, undo the gas pipe underneath, have some washing up liquid and water in a sqeasy bottle to spray round the pipe, to check for gas escapes, even with the isolator off and the meter off, you might still get a ' let by' of gas,

Once the fire is out and you have no gas leaks, Its time to clean the chimney, Thats a dirty job, Sheet the opening of the chimney and dush sheet all the furniture and shove a chimney cleaning brush up there, try to keep all the soot/ dust in the fire place and hover it all up, Next, You'll need to size up the opening for your new fire, This may entail taking out the existing the old fireplace and building a new one, when you've done that, fit the new fire, pipe it up with 10mm or 8mm copper pipe, don't use plastic at all,

This is worth a read www.fireplacesareus.co.uk/shop/help-and-adviceAlso check the section on class 1 flues. And as Dafty says your new fire may need a fused spur for the fan or back lights etc - if you install that type so look at its requirements.

ok tom what is the best way to take pipe into opening so its not too visible.. At the moment its running in 15mm pipe along the side of the chimney breast and then across the front in 8/10mm.

The type of fire you propose fitting AJ, the gas pipe is installed in the Catchment Area & into the back of the Fire.
You really need a Gas Safe Plumber.

Dick's right there AJ because, the gas pipe will need altering from where that brass fitting is , Out of the wall and fed under the floor, coming out inside the fireplace above the finished floor level and be moveable because, when the new fireplace is finished, the fire will need to be connected, then slid in place and gas tight before screwing in down in position, The importance of safety with gas cannot be over stessed,

This is a detail from the latest GasEngineer magazine. I’ve posted this up for a little more detail. It’s not for your guidance aj, as wholeheartedly advise you to get a GS Plumber to do & certify the work. You must not DIY it!!
